“The Role of Black Women, Arts and Activism”  – an exploration and discussion about the work of black women of African descent from around the world that utilize the arts as a tool of global activism; and how the influence and leadership of heroines such as Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba have inspired and continue to inspire them.
Panel moderator bio:
Mavhu Wakatama Hargrove (poetess/author) is an American-born Zimbabwean writer who spent her childhood and teenage years in Harare, Zimbabwe. She has been published in “Chicken Soup For the Cat Lover’s Soul” and Granta Magazine.
Presented as part of the Black Women, Arts and Activism; Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba tribute Festival will take place on Sunday, October 6th, 2019, sponsored and hosted by the Atlas Performing Arts Center in NE Washington, DC. The festival will include an art exhibition, vendors, a spirited panel discussion, and will culminate with our Akua Allrich and the Tribe’s 11th annual Nina Simone Miriam Makeba tribute concert in the evening.
