Christopher Prince’s Loud as the Rolling Sea – Songs of Resistance and Recognition is a concert of protest music and songs of social consciousness from various time periods. He will perform new arrangements of social consciousness/protest music from various time periods. These will be folk tunes, rock music, R&B, and spirituals. He will pull from the catalogs of Cat Stevens, Gil Scott Heron, Tracy Chapman, the Beatles, Bob Marley, and other more contemporary singers. In addition to the music, Prince will inject narratives that reflect on the messages of struggle and cooperation found in this music. This nonlinear mixture of music and poetry will address activism by exploring the relationship between what we believe and what we do. During the civil rights movement, music was a source of inspiration and motivation. Today, as people organize to protect reproductive, voting, and civil rights I hope this performance reinforces the use of music as a tool to affect change.
